This week at the Collage Table - Contrast Variation #6 of 6
I started with a background (5 x 7 inches) built with a contrast of lines - juxtaposing the flat floral shapes of this origami paper against a building drawn with a traditional linear perspective.
Unlike the other collages in this series, this background of paper layers spoke to me more practically - becoming a simple framing device for a found photograph. As you can see, though, I also continue to play with my favorite methods and materials - letting various stitches emphasize the frame while adding color and whimsey with loose threads and a vintage botanical drawing.
Again, we can see how contrast plays a part even as much of the first layer is covered. I have loose threads mimicking a detailed drawing of plant roots and I have created disjointed hand-stitched lines set on top of machine-made straight stitches.
This seemingly haphazard piece leads into our next series on “word play” beginning in June and will also come up again when we explore “stories” in October.
“Counting Ducks” (the title I have lovingly bestowed upon this piece) is an example of making the title an integral part of your collage. We’ll start talking more about the variety of ways words can influence and be added to your art next time with a video introduction to the topic scheduled for June 14.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed all the variations in this series on using contrasting elements which saw the creation of these sample collages…
… with further recent alterations on one of the samples to create this piece, “Until We Meet Again”.
If you missed any of the posts, feel free to look back in the archive. Article titles will indicate the series being discussed.
I will be taking a break next week to focus on other projects, but again, you can look for the next post to arrive on June 14 (with video access available to paying subscribers).
Thanks for being here and happy collaging,
~ Jennifer
