Collage Prompt: Night Sky
Prompt #18
Happy Collage Friday!
Welcome to Prompt #18!
(and the continuation of a series of prompts started in 20251)
Over the next 5 weeks, I’m continuing to share new little collage prompts before I take a 6-week summer break to start Grad School. I hope they give you some fun new bite-sized ideas to bring into your own collage process. I will return in August with new prompts and posts leading up to a collage workshop on the Oregon Coast that I’ll be teaching in September - exciting! In the meantime, I hope you find a little inspiration here in Collage O over the next few weeks to keep you collaging all summer long.
Prompt = Night Sky
This prompt is inspired by a larger piece I am working on this week that inspired me to add a Pacific Northwest Night Sky to offset the ghostly PNW botanicals. While this sits on my studio easel waiting for my next thoughts…
… I took the same concept to a smaller format using a postcard by “Deadly Creative” that I recently acquired from Scrap Creative Reuse in Portland which I used here as the collage base.
The stars are punched out using a hole punch and an awl. The placement is based on an actual star map of a recent Pacific Northwest night sky which printed out using information provided by TimeandDate.com. The gold decorative paper backing is from a collection of donated materials and the textured paint overlay is from my most recent gelatin plate printing session on vintage book and music pages.
I added gold machine stitches to highlight Ursa Major and a few other constellation pieces before collaging a few more paper pieces onto the edges.
Maybe working in this smaller format will help me figure out if/how the larger collage needs to be finished. No hurry, though - it’s being prepared for shows in August and September. For now, I’ll just keep an eye on it in my studio…
More Collaging This Week
Before I go, here’s how last week’s stamp collage turned out (so far)!

Happy collaging,
Jennifer
